Ample green space, a meeting facility the community can use and design elements reflecting the neighborhood are among Greenlink’s plans for a new bus maintenance facility on Arcadia Drive.
As part of the design process, Greenlink invited the public on July 1 to offer feedback during a presentation at the Kroc Center.
Greenville Transit Authority Director James Keel said getting feedback from stakeholders has been essential in developing the plan for the 26-acre site where the new administration and bus maintenance facility will be located.
Keel said giving the property a park-like feel was important to the Greenville Transit Authority board and to nearby residents.
“Green space is something we care a lot about,” he said.
Project Director Ron Reekes from the consulting firm Wendel said incorporating green spaces and park-like elements reflected input from the people who live in Washington Heights, nearby. He also said there are plans to incorporate a sculpture reflecting the history of the historic former Washington High School and whose design will, in part, be guided by input from that school’s alumni association.
Reekes said the design for the new administration building includes public meeting space and will reflect architectural elements of the neighborhood and former high school.
Keel said the latest plans represent about 30% completion of the roughly $25 million project’s design process.
“At this point we’re very much in the ‘draw it and figure it out’ phase,” Keel said.
He added that it’s probably going to be about two years before the project is finished.
The next step involves the Federal Transit Authority reviewing environmental and community impact information for the project as required by law for projects funded with federal dollars. Keel said following approval the designers would get down to the “nuts and bolts” of designing the buildings in detail.
