In riding around the Greenville area over the last six or seven months I have noticed our city and county roads are almost as bad after repaving and surfacing than before with respect to manhole covers. The new paving is NOT smooth.
I believe that the construction companies are failing to follow up with raising the manhole covers to the new paving elevation. Some of the manholes are a good two to four inches below the new paved surfaces. I can’t imagine the road repaving and resurfacing bid specifications did not require that manholes be level with the new pavement.
I honestly believe that the paving construction companies have neglected to comply to the repaving specification!
You can leave from downtown Greenville, drive towards Cherrydale on Poinsett Highway, and hit manhole after manhole. As a driver, you try to miss these manholes to not damage your vehicle.
Another road of concern is U.S. 123 from Easley around Bon Secours St. Francis Downtown hospital — another stretch where drivers must dodge manhole after manhole.
The same is true around Bon Secours Wellness Arena — what a mess it can be as drivers are forced to suddenly switch lanes to avoid manholes disguised as potholes! It’s an accident waiting to happen.
One other concern is signage from downtown Greenville to I-385. There are no directional signs from Main Street to I-385. This would help our visitors navigate downtown.
