Travelers Rest moves to accept 3 county parks: City Council notes

Here’s a recap of the Dec. 19 Travelers Rest City Council meeting.

First reading: Resolution to accept parks

City Council unanimously approved first reading of a resolution to transfer three county parks to city ownership.

Greenville County proposed a transfer of Trailblazer Park, Poinsett Park and Gateway Park to the city of Travelers Rest at no cost.

The transfer includes an agreement between the city and county for the first two years of park maintenance to ensure a smooth transition. Poinsett Park will also require a vote of annexation in January.

A day in honor of retiring fire chief

The city proclaimed Dec. 19 as “Chief Greg Robertson Day” in honor of the recently-retired fire chief.

Robertson began as a firefighter in Travelers Rest at 20 years old in 1984. He served 40 years with the department and had served as fire chief since 2015.

James E. “Mac” McMakin was appointed as the city’s new fire chief in November.

Final approval: FY 2025 budget amendment

City Council voted to amend a typo on the fiscal year 2025 city budget. It was unanimously approved on second reading. The amendment will decrease the city’s budget by roughly $34,000.

Other matters

  • Rezoning of 1500 Trailhead Court near Furman University by the Furman University Foundation from R-15 (Single-Family Residential District) to R-M (Residential Multifamily). This allows for independent living use and assisted living use. Approved, unanimously.
  • Allocation of $25,852.57 of the city’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to the Poinsett Highway streetscape improvement project. Approved, unanimously. All ARPA funds were required to be allocated by close of 2024. The amount is the city’s remaining fund balance.
