Mission Statement
The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation raises funds to increase access to the SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities for students with financial need, support the school’s efforts to provide arts education in under-resourced South Carolina counties and bridge the gap between state funding and the unique needs of a premier public arts school.
The foundation works to ensure that cost is not a barrier for any student accepted to the South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, while also striving to elevate the school’s learning environment and contribute to Greenville’s one-of-a-kind arts community.
Supporting the school’s needs that state operating funds don’t cover, the foundation underwrites special programs, projects and experiences offered at the school.
Historically, more than 25% of the school’s summer-program students have been granted financial assistance to enable them to participate. Similarly, more than 30% of high school students have received foundation support to pay the annual $3,900 meal plan fee — the only cost to attend the school.
The Visiting Guest Artist Program is an essential component of the school’s artistic education. The unique program provides opportunities for students to work directly with master artists at the pinnacle of their fields. The program also provides outreach and community engagement through performances and exhibitions that are free and open to the public.
Impact
The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities serves as a resource for students and teachers across the state. To help drive that mission, the foundation during the last school year provided:
- 657 experiences for more than 161,831 people in 42 South Carolina counties through the Foundation’s Outreach Program
- Financial support to 37% of the students in the high school program and 30% of the students who attended the summer programs
The organization also provides outreach and impact statewide through arts education in high-needs communities, juried art competitions and public-school teacher training.
The school will celebrate it’s 25th anniversary during the next school year.
