Richie Mata’afa, founder of Southern California-inspired burrito pop-up Daylight Burrito, was given the opportunity to pitch his business at GVL Starts Demo Day Oct. 17 in downtown Greenville. He was victorious and the crowd favorite.
GVL Starts is a nine-week program offered through The Hill Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Furman University. The program offers emerging entrepreneurs the opportunity to work alongside and be mentored by local business owners. Demo Day occurs on the ninth week, offering the selected volunteers an opportunity to win $5,000 in startup grants.
Daylight Burrito got its start in 2022. The SoCal-influenced fare doubles down on carbs by including tots or fries inside the tortilla. It’s a sleeper meal but one that shouldn’t be slept on.

13 Stripes Brewery will host its annual birthday party for the Marine Corps on the anniversary of its establishment, Nov. 10. It is the Corps’ 249th birthday.
The party is a scaled-down version of the Marine Corps Birthday Ball. The brewery will hold its own cake-cutting ceremony. The oldest Marine present will cut the first piece of birthday cake and give it to the youngest Marine present.
13 Stripes will release its DD-214 IPA during the event, with 100% of proceeds from the beer going toward Upstate Warrior Solution. The brew’s name comes from the DD-214 form given to military personnel when they are released from service, sometimes called the Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty form.
