Owners of a drive-thru coffee shop planned near Nicholtown in Greenville hope to get another step closer to construction Nov. 14.
Canal Coffee Co. is a North Carolina-based chain specializing in lattes, smoothies and energy drinks while also offering breakfast, lunch and baked goods. The future site is just down the street from McAlister Square at 299 S. Pleasantburg Drive, just outside the Nicholtown Special Emphasis Neighborhood.
A site plan was presented during a city project preview meeting Sept. 24. The city’s zoning appeals board on Nov. 14 is the next stop, when Cape Asset Management will seek a special-exception permit that would allow for the operation of a drive-thru in a Mixed-Use 2 district.
It is not the first drive-thru coffee shop proposed in the corridor. Earlier this year, another team came before the board with the hope of opening Pleasant Roast Coffee across the street at 298 S. Pleasantburg Drive. That application was denied due the design’s inability to meet the minimum parking space requirement and a misalignment with the GVL 2040 Comprehensive Plan’s designation of the area as urban node mixed-use.
