Keith Lockhart, a Furman University graduate, has been chosen as the principal conductor for the BBC Concert Orchestra.
Lockhart, who is the conductor for the Boston Pops, will make his debut with the BBC orchestra on Aug. 30 at the Royal Albert Hall.
Lockhart will continue to work with the Boston Pops, where he has been conductor since 1995.
Lockhart has already conducted the BBC Concert Orchestra on several recordings, broadcasts and concerts over the past two seasons.
The BBC Concert Orchestra has been the house orchestra for BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night for more than 50 years. The orchestra also gives regular broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 and their work can be heard on soundtracks to many BBC TV programs including The Blue Planet and Walking with Dinosaurs.
The orchestra has worked with artists Shirley Bassey, Maxim Vengerov, Kavita Krishnamurti, Pet Shop Boys, Jonny Greenwood, Nigel Kennedy, Bryn Terfel and Burt Bacharach.
The BBC Concert Orchestra will tour the United States this fall.
Lockhart becomes the orchestra’s seventh principal conductor.
In addition to his work with the BBC and Boston Pops, Lockhart is the artistic director of the Brevard Music Center Summer Institute and Festival and is Music Director Emeritus of the Utah Symphony Orchestra.
The orchestra will perform at Furman on Nov. 13. Tickets, which are $45 to $55, go on sale at 10 a.m. on Sept. 7 at Timmons Arena and Ticketmaster outlets.
